TPO33小作文
In the set of materials, the reading passage provides three pieces of theories to explain the purpose of carved stone balls. However,in the following lecture, the professor challenges the theories presented in the reading passages by employing different evidence and reasoning.
First of all,the reading passage contends that the stone balls may be used as weapons for hunting and fighting. This assumption dissolves as the professor states that the weapons such like arrow head and hand axies show signs of used as weapon. Therefore,if the carved stone balls were used as weapons, there should be crack or broken pieces. However the surface of the stone balls is well-preserved and not damaged,so the stone balls should not be used as weapon.
Second, the idea mentioned by the author, that the stone balls may be used as weights or measures,is also refuted in the listening material. The speaker argues that the mass of the stone ball is too considerable. Also, the balls are made of different types of stone like sand stone or green stone.Although the stone balls are in same size, the different densities of the materials result in different mass.
Finally, the professor continues to rebut the third point mentioned in the reading, that the carved stone balls aim to present social status,by offering alternative explanations. He points out that some stone balls are carved in intrigue patterns, but some stone balls are just carved in simple pattern which can not be used to present social values.Furthermore,if the stone balls are used for showing social status, they should be buried with died high-ranking people as their possessions. However, there aren't any stone balls discovered in graves.
In conclusion, the professor believes that the three theories in the reading passage are unconvincing.

Working on projects is not strange to students, which indeed enhance their ability to practice. When it comes to the way how students cope with this kind of task, there are usually two approaches: to work together with others and to work on their own. Personally, I am a big fan of “team working” and I am totally in agreement with students'
participation in a team when engaging in projects. There are some reasons that illustrate my point of view.
First of all, working together is conducive for students to learn from each other, which enables them to be more all-rounded. It is because when students set out to do something, they do not have a choice but to face unexpected problems, and working in a team allows them to watch and learn others' strategies in coping with various problems, which will develop their problem solving skills and boost their ability to learn. Therefore, working as a part of a team provides students with more opportunities to learn from other people's experience and finally promotes their talents.
Besides, team working can generate new ideas to a particular subject, which will help improve work efficiency. As is known to all, the advantage of working together lies in more chances for direct interaction between students. During the brainstorm or other kinds of communication, students can each express their opinions and come up with new ways to address the same issue and this can never be possible for those who merely depend on themselves when carrying out projects. For these concerns, it's a sensible strategy for students to focus on teamwork.
Admittedly, working together can have one or two downsides. For instance, due to lack of unanimous understanding about some problems, students usually do not come up with brilliant ideas at the very beginning and there could be a big waste of time and energy. However, this can be another way to success, because they are more likely to find the best solution by trials and errors.

TPO33独立写作
When it comes to the issue that students can study much more efficient by working together than working alone on the assignments, different people have different ideas. Some people holds the view that it\'s better for students if their teacher give assignments as independent projects, from my point of view, students would achieve more when they complete the teamwork assignments for the reasons that they can fulfill the tasks more quickly and make new friends as well as improve their communication skill.
The most obvious merit by doing teamwork is that students can cooperate with each other and finish the assignment more effectively. People have different advantages among various backgrounds, when they work together, they can take their own strong points to do their best. Take myself as an example, my teacher once asked us to complete an experiment team project on the flower development. It is very difficult for one person to fulfill the whole work. Nonetheless, due to our teamwork, we could collaborate and utilize the virtue of each person. Some of my team members are good at experiment designs and operations, while others are proficient in the data analysis of the experimental results, so we divided the work into two parts and different members carried out diverse tasks, eventually we submitted a perfect accomplishment and spent much less time than we work alone. What\'s more, I have learned a lot from my partners.
Another important benefit by working together is that students have the opportunity to keep in touch with more people, which may bring new friends to the students and improve their communication ability. No one can deny the importance of making friends during students\' school life. When students finish the teamwork, they have a chance to discuss with each other on the assignment and help each other to overcome the potential difficulties. Therefore, students can improve their linguistic expression ability and make good friends during the process. In fact, one of my best friends is just made when we accomplish our teamwork.
Admittedly, students may enhance their independent ability by working alone on the projects to some degree, for instance, they have to solve the problems on the work and seek new ideas by themselves. However, they may overwhelm by the frustration and lose their confidence or unable to finish the assignment. In addition, the two above virtues of teamwork are more appealing to the study of students.
In summary, it is more beneficial for students to do teamwork than independent work. Teachers should give students more opportunities to work together. Only in this way can students study more successful.

Reading
Carved stone balls are curious type of artifact found at a number of locations in Scotland. They date from the late Neolithic period, around 4,000 years ago. They are round in shape; they were carved from several types of stone; most are about 70 mm in diameter; and many are ornamented to some degree. Archaeologists do not agree about their purpose and meaning, but there are several theories.
One theory is that the carved stone balls were weapons used in hunting or fighting. Some of the stone balls have
been found with holes in them, and many have grooves on the surface. It is possible that a cord was strung through the holes or laid in the grooves around the ball. Holding the stone balls at the end of the cord would
have allowed a person to swing it around or throw it.
A second theory is that the carved stone balls were used as part of a primitive system of weights and measures. The fact that they are so nearly uniform in size—at 70 mm in diameter—suggests that the balls were interchangeable and represented some standard unit of measure. They could have been used as standard weights to measure quantities of grain or other food, or anything that needed to be measured by weight on a balance or scale for the purpose of trade.
A third theory is that the carved stone balls served a social purpose as opposed to a practical or utilitarian one. This view is supported by the fact that many stone balls have elaborate designs. The elaborate carving suggests that the stones may have marked the important social status of their owners.
Listening
None of the three theories presented in the reading passage are very convincing.
First, the stone balls as hunting weapons, common Neolithic weapons such as arrowheads and had axes generally show signs of wear, so we should expect thath if the stone balls had been used as weapons for hunting of fighting, they too would show signs of that us. Marry of the stone balls would be cracked or have pieces broken off. However, the surfaces of the balls are generally well preserved, showing little or no wear or damage.
Second, the carved stone balls maybe remarkably uniform in size, but their masses vary too considerably to have
been sued as uniform weights. This is because the stone balls were made of different types of stone including
sandstone, green stone and quartzite. Each type of stone has a different density. Some types of stone are heavier than others just as a handful of feathers weighs less than a handful of rocks. Two balls of the same size are different weights depending on the type of stone they are made of. Therefore, the balls could not have been used as a primitive weighing system.
Third, it’s unlikely that the main purpose of the balls was as some kind of social marker. A couple of facts are
inconsistent with this theory. For one thing, while some of the balls are carved with intricate patterns, many others have markings that are extremely simple, too simple to make the balls look like status symbols.
Furthermore, we know that in Neolithic Britain, when someone died, particularly a high-ranking person, they were usually buried with their possessions. However, none of the carved stone balls have been actually found in tombs or graves. That makes it unlikely that the balls were personal possessions that marked a person’s status within the community.
