Do changes that make our lives easier not necessarily make them better?

Throughout time mankind has strived to make his life easier. Whether it be through technology, science, or theories of social interaction. every generation has made one contribution. From the idea of croprotation to the cellular telephone mankind has advanced. It can be argued however, that not all of these advancements were beneficial. Many times people are accused of “taking the easy way out”, something that is looked down upon in today’s society.

Consider, if you will, ancient Greecian Society. With hardly any of the technological or scientific

advancements we have today, they were able to produce some of the greatest thinkers . Socrates and Plato still influent modern philosophical thought. In addition, these men were well versed in all disciplines. They were thinkers, mathamaticians, writers, scientists, artists and much more. Examine some other great men in history. Leonardo Davinci was one of the greatest scientists and also one of the greatest artists of all time, he even invented and drew up early plans for the helicopter. These ancient men, without the technology and ease of life we have today, were able to produce some of the most prolific additions to human knowledge ever.

Now let us examine some men from our time. Bill Gates, while adding immensely to the pleasures and ease of man’s life, did so only by forcefully destroying many fledgling companies and completely undermining our capitalistic market place. Very few men in our time are leaders in more than one discipline. There are no

scientists/artists or writer/mathamaticians. Men, while being able to more deeply delve into a discipline, are now restricted to it. I attribute this to technology. We now have a life outside of our work. A life with computers, cars, movies, and dinner with the family from across the country. Mankind can no longer devote himself to his work. He has his work life, and his home life. While a cell phone allows me to talk to anyone from anywhere, it prevents me from being alone and fully concentrating. While the internet allows me to look at websites from around the world, it prevents me from doing the work I set out to do.

While technology and science have made man’s life easier, they have not made it better. Man has become less productive and less devoted, partly, as a result of this newfound ease of life. Therefore, What makes our lives easier does not necessarily make them better.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Universities should give the same amount of money to their students’ sports activities as they give to their university libraries. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

The main responsibility of a university is to develop a students’ academic ability. While physical health is an important prerequisite for mental health and academic achievement, sports should play a comparatively small role in college student’s lives.

Since a student’s main activity outside of the classroom is studying, occupying from 4 to 8 hours of their day, a peaceful studying environment plays an important role in a student’s academic development. College dorm rooms can have up to eight students sleeping in one small room and are not good environments for students to study in. To provide excellent studying environment for their students, universities must build large libraries designed to accommodate students as well as books. Since sports should occupy a much smaller part of the student’s time, perhaps only an hour a day, sports facilities need not be as extensive or well-equipped as libraries.

In addition to the costs of building adequate library facilities, a university must also pay every year to keep its collection well organized and up-to-date. The goal of every

university library should be to have the most current books and materials its students need in order to study and do cutting edge research. The larger the students body, the more comprehensive a library’s collection must be. A well-trained staff must also care for materials and help the students. Continuing costs for sports, on the other hand, are

relatively low, requiring only a few part-time staff and maintenance routines. For the most part, students are happy to organize their own sporting events and exercise routines quite independently of the school.

Although a student’s health is critical to their academic success, the investment that a school needs to make to ensure a physically fit student body is relatively small.

Considering that the main mission of the school is to develop a student’s mind and not their body, the school should put more of its resources into its libraries and not its sports

activities. 340 words

SAT og test 4

对于那些会将成功引向灾难的人,作者有如下4种表达: “wrong hands”, “the unworthy”, “those who do not deserve it”,以及 “the unvirtuous”; 一、写作题目

Think carefully about the issue presented in the following excerpt and the

assignment below

The old saying, “be careful what you wish for”, may be an appropriate warning. The drive to achieve a particular goal can dangerously narrow one’s perspective and encourage the fantasy that success in one endeavor will solve all of life’s difficulties. In fact, success can sometimes have unexpected consequences. Those who propel

themselves toward the achievement of one goal often find that their lives are worse once “success” is achieved than they were before.

Assignment: Can success be disastrous? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.{og范文}.

The power of success can be disastrous when placed in the wrong hands. Naturally, there are those who will always choose to manipulate conditions to succeed in their own endeavors, not taking into consideration the lives of those around them. On the other hand, there may be those who do not necessarily pursue selfish ends, but simply do not know where to take success once it has been achieved, thus resulting in their own self-sabotage.

Throughout history, we have seen success used wrongfully in the hands of the unworthy. Powerful leaders of nations, kingdoms, and empires, having succeeded in gaining leadership, have then used their influence wrongfully in achieving their own selfish

(and sometimes twisted) goals. Nero, the Roman emperor who beat his pregnant wife to death and has been suspected of instigating the great fire of Rome in an attempt to boost his own political influence; Henry VIII of England, for whom women were beheaded for not bearing him a son, and who is rumored to have eaten eight chickens a night while English peasants starved; The notorious Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain, who carried out the Spanish Inquisition… The list is endless. Even in literature, we see the corruption and downfall of society and mankind as a whole as a result of the abuse of success in the possession of those who do not deserve it, as seen in William Shakespeare’s tragedy of King Lear. In the story, societal order is replaced with chaos when there is a power shift from Lear to his evil daughters, Regan and Goneril. This order only returns to a slight degree when virtue (in the form of Lear’s good daughter, Cordelia) returns to England. Success is hazardous when awarded to the unvirtuous.

However, there may be those who are not necessarily evil of greedy in their pursuits, but merely do not know how to handle success. This proves to be just more disastrous to the individual than to anyone else, since it is the individual who will then sabotage his own success to return to his former comfort zone. Success is meant to be grown upon, not exploited or feared.

Success, when achieved by the unworthy or inexperienced, is a most disastrous element. Success is not about being happy at the expense of those about you –it is about using one’s newly gained happiness to improve the lives of others. If one reflects on the wise words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, one will never go astray: “To know that one person has breathed easier because you have lived -this is to have succeeded.”

1 effectively and insightfully develops a point of view on the issue and demonstrates outstanding critical thinking, using clearly appropriate examples, reasons, and other evidence to support its position

(The power of success can be disastrous when placed in the wrong hands.)。 (Naturally, there are those who will always choose to manipulate conditions to succeed in their own endeavors, not taking into consideration the lives of those around them. On the other hand, there may be those who do not necessarily pursue selfish ends, but simply do not know where to take success once it has been achieved, thus resulting in their own self-sabotage.)

(Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain)。 (Powerful leaders of nations, kingdoms, and empires, having succeeded in gaining leadership, have then used their influence wrongfully in achieving their own selfish (and sometimes twisted) goals.),从而给人民带来了灾难。 (In the story, societal order is replaced with chaos when there is a power shift from Lear to his evil daughters, Regan and Goneril.)

(it is the individual who will then sabotage his own success to return to his former comfort zone.)

( Success, when achieved by the unworthy or inexperienced, is a most disastrous element.) ( Success is not about being happy at the expense of those about you –it is about using one’s newly gained happiness to improve the lives of others.) (“To know that one person has breathed easier because you have lived -this is to have succeeded.”),并指出如果一个人能够仔细思考这句话,他就不会误入歧途,可谓给“成功带来灾难”的现象开出了一剂药方,升华了主题。

2 is well organized and clearly focused, demonstrating clear coherence and smooth progression of ideas

在叙述事例的时候,作者综合运用了 “On the other hand”, “but”, “thus”, “since”等过渡词,以及过渡句,如第二段开头的 “However, there may be those who are not necessarily evil of greedy in their pursuits, but merely do not know how to handle success.”

3 exhibits skillful use of language, using a varied, accurate, and apt vocabulary

4 demonstrates meaningful variety in sentence structure

5 is free of most errors in grammar, usage, and mechanics

对于那些会将成功引向灾难的人,作者有如下4种表达: “wrong hands”, “the unworthy”, “those who do not deserve it”,以及 “the unvirtuous”;同样是赢得权力,作者也用了 “succeeded in gaining leadership” 和 “power shift”两种表达方式;关于不见于史书的轶事,写尼禄的时候是 “has been suspected of”, 而写亨利八世的时候则是 “is rumored to”。 第一段的 “On the other hand, there may be those who do not

necessarily pursue selfish ends, but simply do not know where to take success once it has been achieved, thus resulting in their own self-sabotage.”既是多重从句,又有现在分词做状语; 而第二段的 “In the story, societal order is replaced with chaos when there is a power shift from Lear to his evil daughters, Regan and Goneril.”

P261 Independent Wring Scoring Rubric.

Topic:

It has been said, “Not everything that is learned is contained in books.” Compare and contrast knowledge gained from experience with knowledge gained from books. In your opinion, which source is more important? Why?

Essay:

Two main sources we gain knowledge from are books and practical experience. Some people think knowledge from books is more important than that from experience, others suppose practice brings about more necessary knowledge than books do. Clearly, either of them has its own advantages. On one hand, knowledge from books effectively provides people with basic information about what they need for their life. If you want to know something about a country in the world, just take a book and read it. This way helps you have comprehensive information about it without spending a lot of money on a trip. In addition, knowledge from books is cumulated from one generation to others, so this has formed an abundant and systematic depository of knowledge for human. If a scientist wants to develop a new theory or law, he must use available laws formulated by other scientists in the past. He can’t make out everything from the commencement. Therefore, it should be admitted that knowledge from books plays an essential role in people’s life. On the other hand, knowledge gained from experience brings about practical feelings of life. No one can cook a good meal just after reading a book teaching cooking. No one can swim after reading a book teaching swimming. No one can do business well after reading commercial and economics books. Almost all things you apply into your real life stem from your own real experience. You can know how to effectively solve your problems only when you have to face them yourself. In short, experience gives people hands-on and realistic knowledge so that they could deal with their real issues in their real lives. In general, real life provides people with more necessary knowledge than books. People still can live well without reading many books. Thanks to you own experience rather than reading business books, you can still manage to become rich . You may learn how to communicate effectively with people just because you contact with them frequently. That is not to mention the fact that all of knowledge from books is collected from real life in order to serve it only. So once knowledge obtained from experience assists you more effectively in real life, why don’t you more highly appreciate it? In short, although knowledge from books is very important, that from real experience is even more significant because it is what people have to rely on to exist.

Altruism is a type of behavior in which an animal sacrifices its own interest for that of another animal or group of animals. Altruism is the opposite of selfishness; individuals performing altruistic acts gain nothing for themselves.

{og范文}.

Examples of altruism abound, both among humans and among other mammals. Unselfish acts among humans range from the sharing of food with strangers to the donation of body organs to family members, and even to strangers. Such acts are altruistic in that they benefit another, yet provide little reward to the one performing the act.

In fact, many species of animals appear willing to sacrifice food, or even their life, to assist other members of their group. The meerkat, which is a mammal that dwells in burrows in grassland areas of Africa, is often cited as an example. In groups of meerkats, an individual acts as a sentinel, standing guard and looking out for predators while the others hunt for food or eat food they have obtained. If the sentinel meerkat sees a predator such as a hawk approaching the group, it gives an alarm cry alerting the other meerkats to run and seek shelter. By standing guard, the sentinel meerkat gains nothing—it goes without food while the others eat, and it places itself in grave danger. After it issues an alarm, it has to flee alone, which might make it more at risk to a predator, since animals in groups are often able to work

together to fend off a predator. So the altruistic sentinel behavior helps ensure the survival of other members of the meerkat’s group.

Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they oppose specific points made in the reading passage.

Rembrandt is the most famous of the seventeenth-century Cutch painters. However, there are doubts whether some paintings attributed to Rembrandt were actually painted by him. One such painting is known as Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet. The painting was attributed to Rembrandt because of its style, and indeed the

representation of the woman’s face is very much like that of portraits known to be by Rembrandt. But there are problems with the painting that suggest it could not be a work by Rembrandt.

First, there is something inconsistent about the way the woman in the portrait is dressed. She is wearing a white linen cap of a kind that only servants would wear –yet the coat she is wearing has a luxurious fur collar that no servant could afford. Rembrandt, who was known for his attention to the details of his subjects’ clothing, would not have been guilty of such an inconsistency.

Second, Rembrandt was a master of painting light and shadow, but in this painting there elements do not fit together. The face appears to be illuminated by light reflected onto is from below. But below the face is the dark fur collar, which would absorb light rather than reflect it. So the face should appear partially in shadow -- which is not how it appears. Rembrandt would never have made such an error.

Finally, examination of the back of the painting reveals that is was painted on a panel made of several pieces of wood glued together. Although Rembrandt often painted on wood panels, no painting known to be by Rembrandt uses a panel glued together in this way from several pieces of wood.

For these reasons the painting was removed for the official catalog of Rembrandt’s paintings in the 1930s.

Professors are normally found in university classrooms, offices, and libraries doing research and lecturing to their students. More and more, however, they also appear as guests on television news programs, giving expert commentary on the latest events in the world. These television appearances are of great benefit to the professors themselves as well as to their universities and the general public.

Professors benefit from appearing on television because by doing so they acquire reputations as authorities in their academic fields among a much wider audience than they have on campus. If a professor publishes views in an academic journal, only other scholars will learn about and appreciate those views. But when a professor appears on TV,

thousands of people outside the narrow academic community become aware of the professor’s ideas. So when professors share their ideas with a television audience, the professors’ importance as scholars is enhanced.

Universities also benefit from such appearances. The universities receive positive publicity when their professors appear on TV. When people see a knowledgeable faculty member of a university on television, they think more highly of that university. That then leads to an improved reputation for the university. And that improved reputation in turn leads to more donations for the university and more applications from potential students.

Finally, the public gains from professors’ appearing on television. Most television viewers normally have no contact with university professors. When professors appear on television, viewers have a chance to learn from experts and to be exposed to views they might otherwise never hear about. Television is generally a medium for commentary that tends to be superficial, not deep or thoughtful. From professors on television, by contrast, viewers get a taste of real expertise and insight.
