The Reuse of Textbooks

The Reuse of Textbooks
As is known to all, when students graduate from school, most of their textbooks, which are still in good condition, are thrown away. Therefore, a campaign of reusing textbooks has been launched in some primary and secondary schools in our country.
It will be of tremendous benefit to reuse textbooks. First and foremost, a considerable amount of waste will be avoided as one student’s trash literally becomes another student’s treasure. Second, this will lead to a cut in the textbooks expenses, which means less financial stress for the parents. Third, less new textbooks and more second-hand textbooks means a great deal of natural resources will be saved and the pollution produced by paper mills will be reduced.
In my view, reusing textbooks can make our environment and life much better. It is not only an effective way for the students to develop a good habit of reading and taking care of books. It also helps cultivate their sense of social responsibility of valuing common property and improve their cooperation consciousness. Lastly, it helps promote their awareness of treasuring natural resources, which is integral to the sustainable development of the society.

More Multimedia-aided Teaching or Not?
The information technology has revolutionized the way we live, and this trend also extends to university classrooms. The traditional textbook-mediated teaching model tends to be gradually eliminated and replaced by multimedia-aided teaching. There arises a debate over what role the multimedia-aided teaching should play in the
current education.
Some people believe that the multimedia-aided teaching should play a dominant role in modern education. It makes the classroom teaching vivid and effective by imparting information through various media such as picture, sound and video. Moreover, the diversity of multimedia-aided teaching attracts students’ attention and mobilizes their passion for study. Others, however, charge multimedia-aided teaching with a list of complaints. For one thing, the interactivities between teacher and students, for example, eye contact and communication, are spoiled because everyone’s focus is put on the multimedia. For another, too much multimedia may distract students’ attention from what’s being studied and may be exhausting.
As far as I’m concerned, multimedia-aided teaching is a trend for future education. While we take advantage of it, we must be aware of its negative influences. Only when the drawbacks are overcome can we expect the multimedia-aided teaching to have a big role to play in the classroom.

Extra-curricular Activities on Campus
Currently, college campuses are filled with all sorts of clubs and societies catering for different interests of the young people, and many students are showing great enthusiasm for participating in those club activities which have become an indispensable part of their college life.
A couple of driving factors lie behind this phenomenon. Above all, attending the clubs can enrich the students’ life by engaging them in interesting activities, which is a necessary complement to their academic life. Moreover, these activities provide students a stage to show themselves and bring their talents into full play. Last but most importantly, it helps develop their abilities and skills such as communication skills and management abilities which are greatly essential to their career after graduation from universities.
Personally, I hold the idea that only on the premise that priority is given to academic courses, can college students engage themselves in certain club activities,
which is a useful way to make them all-round developed talents rather than bookworms buried in school work.

The Pros and Cons of Dormitory Life

The Pros and Cons of Dormitory Life
As freshmen, living in a dorm seems like a new experience for most of us. We are no longer the king of the roost and have to learn to get on well with others. Some students hold that living in a dormitory is a great experience in life. Firstly, by living under the same roof, we can learn to be considerate towards others, share interests and views and develop lifelong friendships. Furthermore, living in a dormitory is far more convenient owing to the proximity to the teaching building and other facilities, which saves us a lot of time. Finally, living in a dormitory is quite safe, especially for the girls.
However, there are still many people who regard dorm life as a trying thing. On the one hand, they think it is stressful and challenging to live with several others who have different habits and lifestyles. On the other hand, they can hardly keep their privacy in the crowdedness. Moreover, the time schedule of the dormitory is not as flexible as living in off-campus apartments.
Personally, I am inclined to be on the side of the former view. Living in the dormitory will be an unforgettable memory. The convenience and the feeling of safety and security can guarantee a comfortable life on campus.

How to Manage Money?
Living away from home is a personal and financial turning point for university students. But the feeling of freedom can quickly give way to anxiety. In order not to
be daunted by the financial pressure, we need to know how to manage money.
Here are some good tips for us to follow. To begin with, we must learn how to budget our money. It is advisable to seek help from money management software or keep accounts by ourselves. Account keeping is a helpful habit to get rid of irrational spending and consumerism. Moreover, smart spending can spare us money without sacrificing a smart life. We may try seasonal discount and only stick to basics instead of trendy fashion in clothing. As for books and stationery, we can buy them online. Besides, we could do some part-time jobs to earn pocket money.
In conclusion, “good planning and hard work lead to prosperity”. Just as the proverb says, sensible money management can guarantee a good education and a comfortable lifestyle. We all need to try our best to be an expert in managing our money.

3. 我的看法
On College Students’ Being Freelancers
Freelancer is a term referring to those people who take paid assignments from random, independent clients, such as offering tutoring services, doing translation work, or running an online shop. Recently this idea of self-employment enjoys great popularity among college graduates.
Many students dream of becoming freelancers for several benefits. Above all, freelance work provides us with opportunities of employing our creativity to make a living. For example, we can work as a writer, a photographer, or a designer without limiting ourselves to a particular field. Second, the flexibility of being a freelancer caters for young people’s needs for freedom. You can be your own boss, deciding when, where and how much you work, and choosing the tasks according to your interest. Last but not least, freelance work can be challenging because it requires working on different projects, which keeps us fresh and informed.
In conclusion, freelance work not only stimulates a person’s creativity but also alleviates the pressure from a tight job market. It is wise for new graduates to turn to this win-win solution to employment problems.

3. 我的看法
Fashion on Campus
It is an unquestionable fact that an increasing number of college students today are in hot pursuit of fashion, which has aroused great concern in the society. They are crazy about everything fashionable and prevailing, particularly famous-brand clothing.
People’s opinions differ greatly on this phenomenon. The supporters proclaim that it is totally acceptable for college students to follow fashion, as everyone hopes to look good and be well accepted by others. Besides, pursuing fashion may reflect college students’ pioneering spirit, for they have lively and enquiring minds and are easy to accept new things. But on the contrary, the opponents have the idea that it is imperative for college students to concentrate on academic performance instead of fashion. Moreover, the pursuit of fashion will impose great financial burden on their parents.
Personally, I hold the idea that college students should adopt a more reasonable attitude towards the pursuit of fashion. I always believe that we college students should compete with our peers for better scholarly achievements instead of more expensive fashionable clothes.

As a student, you must be excited to know something about American school students. In fact, just like in China, in the United States, high school is usually divided into two periods, the first two or three years are called “junior high school” and the other is “senior high school”. In China, children enjoy free education of nine years, but in the United States, the students enjoy free education until they are 18 years old. As a result of the free education system (制
度), American children have little difficulty in going to senior high school.
American high school students can take part in a lot of activities outside of the classroom. The activities are organized by the school, such as joining a music group or a sports team. Certainly, just like us students in China, American students have to work hard in order to get good marks if they want to go to a good university. They take classes in all kinds of subjects all through the high school period. And those who come out with low marks at the end of a school year and who should repeat a grade are often allowed to go on to the next grade. In American high schools, there is fighting or hurting or other kinds of bad behaviors. So children who want to go to university are often sent to suburban (郊区

It takes many years for you to grow up. There are two periods in your life when you grow rapidly. The first period begins right after you are born and lasts until you are about six months old. The second period starts when you reach the age of 13. First, girls grow faster than boys, then boys catch up and grow faster and stronger. Your head stops growing earlier than the rest of you. By the time you are ten, your head is nearly full size. The bones of your arms and legs are short when you are a baby. When you reach the age of nine, your bones starts to grow rapidly, and will keep growing until you reach your full height (高度).
Besides growing taller, your body changes in other ways. When a boy is about 13 years old, his voice begins to get deeper and he may begin to grow a beard (胡子). At about the age of 13, a girl’s body begins to function (运行) like a woman’s. Young people in most countries like to dance. Different peoples have different kinds of dances.
Pretend (假装)that you are in Africa. You are visiting the Kikuyu tribe.
Hear the drums beat! Listen to the flutes! Almost 2,000 Kikuyus are meeting for the most important dance of the year. First, the Kikuyus choose a large, flat place for their dance. For hundreds of years, they have danced on an autumn night when the moon is full. The moon and the flame from small fires light the dancers. Older people watch from the side while young men and women gather at the dancing place. The girls wear leather skirts and tops. The men wear fancy headdresses and carry spears. The dancers' skin and clothes are colored by light red chalk. The chalk and the firelight make the dancers look like statues. The dancers act out stories of good and bad deeds. The dances tell stories of lion hunts and other adventures. In one dance, the girls stand on the boys' feet. The girls are pretending to be afraid of snakes. All night the drums beat and the fires burn. But the dancers never seem to get tired. 1. The place where the Kikuyu tribe dances is _______. A. flat B. Small C. hilly D. square 2. Go to church, then have a big lunch, then go out to play while mum does the housework. That was a typical (典型
的) British Sunday in the 1960s. But things now could not be more different. Some B
ritish sociologists recently studied the typical British Sunday. They found that people get up later and do less housework than they did 40 years ago. They are far more likely to be out shopping or enjoying themselves than cooking Sunday lunch. Sunday mornings were busy 40 years ago. Most women caught up on their weekly housework and cooked a nice lunch. They seldom allowed themselves any “leisure” until afternoon, after the dishes were cleaned. Then there would be another rush to the table between 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm for tea.
But now, Britons can have brunch (早午
餐) at the restaurant. Fewer people bother to cook themselves.
“You only have two free days a week. You don’t want to have to waste one because there is nothing to do but watch boring TV,” said Elizabeth Biggs, 25, a producer in London.
“On Saturday you are recovering from the week,” Biggs added. “Sundays are the last chance for the weekend — you want to get as much as you can out of the day before you have to go back to work.” In the past, British women usually did their shopping during the week, while the husband was at work. “Now men seem to do that as much as women,” said Jonathan Gershuny, a professor who took part in the study. Men also do more housework now on Sundays. Back in the 1960s, men were far more likely to spend Sundays out of the house — at the pub or playing football — before lunch. 1. Many Britons have brunch at the restaurant because _______. A. They have no time to cook at home. B. They get up too late. C. They won’t bother to cook themselves. D. They will go to church. 2. Which of the following is NOT true? A. Britons used to go to church on Sundays. B. Britons usually had a big lunch at home. C. British women usually did their shopping during the week in the past. D. British men did little housework at home in the past. 3. The text mainly tells us ________. A. what Britons did on Sundays B. why Britons go shopping on Sundays C. how Britons spend their holidays D. the changes of the ways the Britons spend their Sundays 4. What can we infer from the passage? A. Men do more housework on Sundays. B. Sundays in Britain might be very boring in the past. C. No people go to church on Sundays now. D. Britons all go out on Sundays. 八
Every day we go to school and listen to the teacher, and the teacher will ask us some questions. Sometimes, the classmates will ask for your opinions of the work of the class. When you are telling others in the class what you have found out about these topics, remember that they must be able to hear what you are saying. You must speak so that they can hear you—loudly enough and clearly enough but without trying to shout or appearing to force yourself. Remember, too, that it is the same if you are called to an interview whether it is with a professor of your school or a government official who might meet you. The person you are seeing will try to put you at your ease (not worried) but the situatio

Dear sir,
I am very glad to introduce my trip in Xi‟ an,the capital city of Shanxi Province. What impress me deeply are its natural scenery and long history.
First,as is known to the world,Xi‟ an has a long history and is the origin of Chinese civilization. The cultural and historical significance of the area,as well as so many historical sites, help Xi‟ an enjoy the title of „Natural History Museum‟. Just take Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses for example. It is praised as‘the eighth major miracle of the world’.Second,it is in a favorable geographical location surrounded by water and hills, for example, to the north of the city stands the Qinling Mountains and to the north lies the Weihe River. I have also climbed Mountain Huashan, one of the five bestknown mountains in China, which is famous for its breathtaking cliffs and its unique characteristics.
It is really worth your visiting. I am looking forward to your coming.
Yours, Li Ming
3. Chart
以下是某英文报联合你校对你市(Kangming City)1998年到2008年家庭消费变化的图表,请据此写一篇短文,作一文字说明。
图表1 图表2
The average family income in our Kangming City increased from 8,000 yuan per year in 1998 to 20,000 yuan in 2008. In the meantime, the structure of the average family expenses has changed, too. These graphs show the change clearly.
The biggest part of the average family expenses is housing. In 1998, the average family spent 25 percent of its income on housing. In 2880, expenses on housing rose to 42 percent. Food and drink are the second biggest part of the average family expenses. In 1998, about 18% of the average income was spent on this item. In 2008, the figure grew to 30%. As a result of such increase in the expenses on housing and food, expenses on other items have been reduced from 57% in 1998 to 28% in 2008.
Thus, a conclusion can be drawn that as income increases, people can improve their living step. But still the average family has to spend a large part of income to meet the basic needs.

After a week of hard study, we decided to have a relaxation for the weekend. We discussed where to go in our class meeting. Some of us advised to go to the amusement park, some others suggested going boating, there were also some students believing climbing mountains is a great choice due to its great benefits for our health. Finally, we all agreed to climb mountains.
On the Saturday, we started climbing mountain very early with bright sunshine and gentle breeze greeting us. When arriving at the mountain top, we were shocked to see a great deal of rubbish scattering every where. We were surprised by the scene and angry with irresponsible ones who threw about the rubbish and pollute the environment.
We classified the rubbish on the way down the mountain, and then put some of them in the recycled bin and the others in the un-recycled bin. Although we were tired
